Providing Clarity, Compassion and Choice to cancer patients since 1969

The SAcramento Tennis Community comes together to raise funds for THEsecondopinion

Understanding What We Do

Thesecondopinion offers free second opinion consultations to cancer patients using a unique panel format in which doctors, patients and their family members all participate. By providing free, comprehensive second opinions we help cancer patients with limited financial resources overcome what are frequent barriers to obtaining access to medical resources and education about their disease. Our service provides cancer patients the same access to medical resources as those who usually have a broader access to medical care, in their language and at their level of understanding.

Thesecondopinion holds three second opinion review panels each month, on Fridays from 11:00 to 3:00. In March of 2020 during the COVID-19 Pandemic we transitioned to providing second opinions via video/telephone conferencing. Each virtual review panel serves three patients and respective families – each patient is scheduled separately and receives an individual Zoom invitation. A review panel consists of five to seven volunteer doctors who are board-certified in the medical specialties needed to review each individual case – volunteer physicians meet virtually two hours prior to the patient review panels to review each of the three medical cases. Patients, and their family members who attend the virtual review panel, receive input from a radiologist, pathologist, radiation oncologist, medical oncologists and surgical sub-specialists, as needed. The panelists answer questions directed by the patient and provide recommendations for treatment, symptom management, support services or further testing, if needed. It is one of our goals to have patients leave the meeting feeling empowered to move forward, confident they are getting optimal care and pursuing the best possible course of treatment.
